by Cornelia Meigs

Barred from his family home-stead by his mean-spirited uncle, eighteen-year-old Chris weathers a Minnesota winter in a small cabin with his grandfather.  Poverty and the tempting stories of a wandering Easterner convince Chris to harvest the trees on his grandfather's land and float the logs down the spring floodwaters of the Mississippi to the lumber mills in Saint Louis.  Filled with stories of raft hands and river pilots, this fast-paced novel has all the momentum of the great Mississippi.

Recommended for young readers ages 10 years and up.  Perhaps ideal for 12 - 14 years of age.

Reviews

"Fun historical fiction that all 6 of our kids loved (ages 5-14). Is the coming of age story of 2 very different young men and the challenges in their own personalities that each one needs to overcome to mature into manhood (one needs to learn to stick to hard work and not give up, and the other needs to learn to come out of his shell and be a leader when he'd rather be invisible--and a whole lot more). There are some SUPER POSITIVE older male role models too. Reminds me of the importance of older, wiser adults in our kids' lives. Overall a delightful story with adventure and humor!" ~ ARS
